Thom Tillis Won’t Seek Reelection, Urges Trump to Find Replacement

North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis has told former President Donald Trump to begin searching for a new GOP Senate candidate, confirming he won’t seek reelection.
“I look forward to having the pure freedom to call the balls and strikes as I see fit and representing the great people of North Carolina to the best of my ability,” he said in a statement.
Tillis’ decision adds a new challenge for Republicans hoping to keep control of the seat in the upcoming midterms.
Tillis and Trump recently clashed over a major tax and spending bill that included Medicaid cuts—a sticking point for Tillis, who cited the potential harm to North Carolinians.
While he insists the disagreement wasn’t the only reason for stepping down, he acknowledged it played a role in his decision, along with other factors that have built up over time.
Trump said on social media Sunday that Tillis’ announcement was “Great News!”
