Celebrate Connection: National High Five Day

Every third Thursday in April is made for smiles, slaps, and celebration!

The Power of a Palm Slap

National High Five Day is all about spreading joy and encouragement. One hand raised, one hand met—it’s simple, fun, and unites people everywhere. Whether you’re high-fiving your best friend or a complete stranger, this small gesture carries big energy.

The Legendary Origins

Two epic moments fuel the folklore.

In 1977, Dodgers teammates Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke created history with a high five after a home run.

Then, in the 1978–79 season, Louisville’s Wiley Brown and Derek Smith took it from the floor to the sky, swapping low-fives for high ones.

High Five vs. The Rest

Sure, there’s the fist bump, chest bump, and even the end zone dance—but the high five? It reigns supreme. Fast, friendly, and full of fire, it’s the ultimate sign of shared victory.

Ways to Join the Fun

Where It All Began

In 2002, three University of Virginia students—Conor Lastowka, Sam Miotke, and Wynn Walent—turned a simple slap into a national celebration.

Most in 24 hours: 14,607 by Pete Timbs, 2012

Final Thought

Today’s the day—reach out, lift up, and give someone a reason to smile. High five, and keep the good vibes alive! ✋
