Pitt County Department of Social Services (DSS) needs help from the community to bring “Holiday Cheer” to the 196 foster children currently in legal custody of the agency.

Holiday Cheer is an annual holiday support program that relies solely on donations from citizens and community partners. Donations of financial assistance along with new, unwrapped toys and clothing items are being accepted. Please consider sponsoring a child by purchasing items such as toys, gift cards, board games, puzzles, coloring books, crayons and dolls. Monetary donations and various gift cards are needed for the teenage population. DSS is also in need of diapers (all sizes), pull-ups (all sizes), baby wipes, hygiene items, socks, pajamas, gloves and winter hats.

“Vulnerable children experience Christmas and holidays differently. A seemingly small, insignificant thing can mean the world to them at Christmas or any special time of the year,” says Sharon Rochelle, Social Services Director.

DSS requests donations be made by December 9, 2024 to distribute items to the children; however, the Department will accept donations after this date. Oftentimes, children can be placed into custody very close to the holiday and the Department tries to prepare for those situations. “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much during this holiday season,” says Chandra Mewborn, DSS Permanency Planning Unit Supervisor.

Please make checks or money orders payable to Pitt County Department of Social Services earmarked “Foster Care Holiday Fund.” Mail or deliver your donation to Pitt County Department of Social Services, ATTN: Foster Care Special Needs & Holiday Fund, 1717 W 5th Street,

Greenville, N.C. 27834.
