Safely dispose of unneeded medications this weekend at the Hillsborough Police Department’s Operation Medicine Drop.

The drive-through event will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the Walmart Supercenter, 501-B Hampton Pointe Blvd.

“We encourage everyone to clean out their medicine cabinets,” said Sgt. Scott Foster, who leads the department’s Community Action Team. “With high rates of overdoses across the country, this simple step can help keep prescription medications out of the wrong hands and make our community safer.”

The event is part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Campaign. It offers a safe and secure way to get rid of old or unneeded prescription and over-the-counter medications, including pet medications. The service is free and anonymous. The goal is to prevent accidental poisonings and drug abuse and to protect waterways.

Since North Carolina’s first drug take-back event in 2010, the program has collected and incinerated more than 359 million pills. The opioid epidemic is a crisis in North Carolina and nationally. On average, 4 people die from overdose in North Carolina each day, with more than 79% of those deaths involving some type of opioid.
