Who’s that girl?

Eve answers the decades-long question in her new twin-titled memoir.

A staple in the entertainment industry since her burgeoning as the first lady of the Ruff Ryders – the rap label and group that consisted of the late DMX, Swizz Beats, and more – Eve has long established herself as “that girl”. If the chart-topping albums, Grammy awards, and trailblazing moments in television and fashion didn’t prove it, her new book will. In it the rapper and actress reveals the unperceived depth behind her gritty, edgy, and effortlessly cool West Philadelphia exterior.

During a recent visit to The Breakfast Club the author dished on the major themes of the book – motherhood, marriage, and making peace with herself. She shared with the radio show hosts, DJ Envy, Charlamagne, and Loren Lorosa, how her childhood and previous ectopic pregnancy shaped her parenting style.

“I had this ectopic pregnancy when I was on my sitcom that I never told anybody about, and I actually did not even recognize it until I was ready to get pregnant with my kid,” she revealed. “I was anxiety master level when I was pregnant on the set of Queens because I was like, here it is, I’m working, which is great, and I’m so grateful and blessed, but is it to the detriment of my kid? Like, am I gonna lose this baby?”

Thankfully, Eve and her husband, Maximilian Cooper, welcomed son Wilde Wolf, 2, in February 2022. Admittedly raised to be “fiercely independent,” the “Love Is Blind” rapper confessed she was afraid she wouldn’t connect with him. Now, a self-proclaimed “smother mother”, she is excited for the opportunity to raise her son out of love, not fear. The mogul says living in London adds to that dynamic as well. Worlds away from the rough streets of West Philly, she is glad to be able to give her child a different experience.

Before motherhood and marriage, Eve prioritized her emotional and mental healing. Echoing the vulnerability in her memoir, the “Gangsta Lovin” artist dished on her bouts with alcoholism, anxiety, and depression. At one point she turned to a psychic for help but ultimately learned she had to face her issues on her own.

“I would call her for everything because I didn’t trust myself, and one day she fired me,” she recalled. “I called her, and she was like, no, you’re depending on me for too much. I have to let you go.

She continued, “At one point, I called her and I was just in a dark place, and she was like you know what you need to do. I am not responsible for you. You have to figure this out.”

“At the end of the day you cannot look outside yourself,” Eve said. “It does not matter who it is or what they do. You have to look within.”

Eve wants readers to glean determination and inspiration from her story. In closing she said, “This is a book about me realizing how determined I was to believe in myself to get to a certain place.”
