WRAL is reporting that North Carolina State chancellor Randy Woodson is expected to announce his retirement.

Woodson is reportedly expected to retire when his contract ends on June 30, 2025.

Woodson has served as chancellor since 2010. During his long tenure, he presided over the UNC System’s largest student body, with more than 37,000 enrolled in fall 2023. He navigated operations during the COVID-19 pandemic and worked to improve mental health services amid an increase in student suicides.

His retirement was presumably planned before receiving a “vote of no confidence” over mishandling the Poe Hall cancer case.

Woodson also received national acclaim with a feature in The Chronicle of Higher Education, as well as a 65% increase in freshman enrollment since the start of his tenure. He also saw increases in first-year retention rates, five-year graduation rates and number of federal research grants received.

WRAL notes that the UNC System has three vacancies for chancellors, including an ongoing search at UNC-Chapel Hill.
