Johns Hopkins University, East Baltimore, East Baltimore Community School
BALTIMORE, MD – DECEMBER 18 Second grader, Craig Jackson, and other students at The East Baltimore Community School, put their fingers in front of their lips as a quiet sign as they walk in the hallway of the school. Johns Hopkins University has taken over a public school in a distressed area of East Baltimore. The East Baltimore Community School is a starting point for a huge redevelopment project in that neighborhood, which the university is undertaking in order to turn around the area and protect its medical campus. It’s a challenge many major urban universities face. They are not only education centers; they are also developers and landlords next to some of the most downtrodden areas in the country.
